PRE-SEA TRAINING SYLLABUS-YEAR 2022

 

Syllabus of Pre-Sea Training is divided into three terms:

 

FIRST SEMESTER

 

1.       INTRODUCTION

Time, Watches and Bells , Deadman Alarm , Quarter Master and Sentry Duties, Parts of Ship.

2.       KNOW YOUR ROPES

Vegetables Fiber Ropes, Construction , Coiling, Flacking, Cheesing down, Whippings, Opening a new Coil, characteristics, care and maintenance. Steel Wire Ropes, Construction, Special types, Coiling, Cutting, Opening a new Coil, care and maintenance. Synthetic fiber Ropes, Materials used, Construction, Special Characteristics and Care of Synthetic Ropes.

3.       ROPES, WIRES AND CHAINS

Measuring Ropes and Chains, Safe Working Loads.

4.       KNOTS, BENDS AND HITCHES

Knots, Bends and Hitches , Breaking flags , Mousing a Hook, Rope Splices, Eye, Short, Long, Back, Cut, Chain.

5.       BLOCKS AND TACKLES

Blocks, Parts of a Block, Types of Blocks, Overhauling Blocks, Markings, Tackles , Parts, Power Gained, Type of Tackles, Reeving a three- fold purchase.

6.       STATIONS FORE AND AFT

Mooring a ship alongside a wharf, Bights on springs, Rat guards, Rope and Chain Stoppers, Back lash, Securing ropes on bitts, Securing more than one rope on a single bollard. Throwing heaving line, Messenger, Mooring a Ship to Buoys, Slip Wire, Mooring Terms and Orders, general Safety Precautions.

7.       CONNING A SHIP

Mariner’s Compasses, Compass Points, Steering, Helm Orders.

8.       STEERING GEAR

Hydraulic Steering Gear, Electric Steering Gear, Auto Pilot.

9.       CARGO WORK

Holds and Tween decks, Cleaning of Holds and Bilges, testing bilge suction, Smoke detection, Dunnage, Derrick, Hoisting and lowering, Topping winches, Union Purchase, swinging derrick with powered guys, Types of Slings, Accident prevention when working cargo, Draft marks, Load lines, Battening down hatches, Mechanical Hatch Covers, Preparing ship for sailing, Ventilation of Cargo during the voyage, Hold Temperature.

  

 

 

SECOND SEMESTER

 

10.   HEAVY LIFT DERRICKS

Jumbo, Stulken, Velle.

11.   ANCHOR WORK

Bower and Stream Anchor, Stock and Stockless Anchors, Parts Chain Cable, Joining Shackles, Chain Lockers, Windlass, Bow Stopper, Cable markings, Anchor Bells, Anchor Signals, Weighing Anchor, Dropping Anchor, Securing Anchor for Sea.

12.   SHIP MAINTENANCE (In relation to paints & Accessories )

Chipping, Scarping, Painting, Paint brushes, Paints, Types of Paints, Painting Defects, How to Paint , Paint Defects.

13.   SHIP MAINTENANCE

Washing Paint Work, Stage Hitch, Safety Precautions, Oiling Wires, Bosun’s Chair, Self-lowering Hitch, Wire Splicing, Liverpool Splice, Locking Splice, Worming, Parcelling and Serving, Canvas Work, Types of Seams, Flat, Round, Tabling, Herring Boning, Patching Canvas, Changing the covering of a lifebuoy.

14.   BRIDGE DUTIES (Additional equipment kept on Bridge)

The Hand Lead, Markings, Benefit of the Lead, Heaving the Lead, Calling out Soundings, Patent Sounding Machine, Patent Log, Parts of Log, Streaming and hauling in procedure, Pilot Ladder.

15.   BRIDGE DUTIES( In relation to Navigational Watch)

Lights and Singnals for power driven ships under way, for ships at anchor, ships not under command, for ships aground Quarantine Signals.

16.   MISCELLANEOUS

Duties of a Lookoutman, Reporting objects by bell and verbally Tank and bilge soundings, Working clothes Parts of a shackle Parts of a Thimble Racking Seizing Precautions before approaching bad weather.

17.   TANKER AND TANKER PRACTICE

Construction of tankers, cargo of pumps, Inert Gas system, Tanker pipeline types, Suction Pipe, Types of Valves, Ullage, Remote Ullaging, UTI, COW, Liquified Gases and hazards, Enclosed Space and enclosed space permit.

 

 

THIRD SEMESTER

 

18.   FLAGS AND FLAG ETIQUETTE

Type of Flags, When and where hoisted Flags hoisted when entering or leaving a port, when shifting a ship, when berthed Saluting another ship Mourning, Meanings of some important code flags.

19.   SAILING TECHNIQUES

Types of Rig, Parts of a Sails, Setting Sails, Trimming the Sails, Tending the Helm, Sailing the Boat, Sailing terms and orders, Reeving a Sail.

20.   FIRE FIGHTING

Causes of Fire, Fire Fighting Appliances, Types of Fire, Types of Portable Fire Extinguishers, Fire Drill.

21.   LIFE SAVING APPLIANCES

Details of Life Saving Appliances, Thermal Protective Aids, Line Throwing Appliances, Portable Radio Apparatus, Two-way Radiotelephone Apparatus, Emergency Position Indication Radio Beacons, Rocket Parachute Flares, Embarkation Devices, Lifeboats General Requirements, Types of Life rafts, Types of Launching Appliances, Abandon ship drill.

22.   BREECH’ES BUOY

Rockets, Life Saving Apparatus, Signals, Procedure at the ship, Demonstration of a Breeches’ Buoy, Shore party’s work.

23.   ABANDON SHIP

Emergency Signal, Action following, Abandon ship signal, Action following, Survival at Sea, Search and Rescue, Landing boat in a Surf.
